This edited volume examines old East Asian picture postcards archived in Slovene museums and library collections. Towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, picture postcards became a very popular communication medium as well as the focus of passionate collecting. This boom was intertwined with the advance of photographic and printing technologies, the rise of mass tourism and the development of the postal system, both of which were based on the improvement of transportation networks, and the growing middle class with their new patterns of consumption. In Slovene lands and in the Austro-Hungarian regions in general, this was a period of intensification of contacts with East Asia, particularly through the Europeans’ maritime presence in the region. Chapters in this monograph analyse, from various points of view, the picture postcards with East Asian motifs, which were produced from the end of the 19th century up to a few years after the First World War, and their original users – buyers, senders, recipients and collectors.
