Synopsis

Prof. dr. Marko Uršič is a retired professor of logic and philosophy of nature at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. His philosophical and literary work includes a number of books and many articles in Slovene and foreign journals. As a professor, in addition to logic, he lectured mainly on philosophical cosmology, philosophy of space and time, and Renaissance philosophy, on which he also gave several cycles of public lectures. Together with co-author Olga Markič he wrote the textbook Osnove logike (Basics of Logic), which was reprinted several times. He founded and edited the religiological and philosophical journal Poligrafi, in which, among other things, he edited the books Panteizem (Pantheism) and Nikolaj Kuzanski (Nicholas of Cusa). At the association Slovenska matica he was the editor of Girodano Bruno's Kozmološki dialogi (Cosmological Dialogues), translated by Mojca Mihelič, and for the past few years he has been editing Zbrani spisi (Collected Writings) of Plotinus, which are translated by Sonja Weiss. Uršič's main literary work is the great tetralogy Štirje časi (Four Ages) subtitled »Filozofski pogovori in samogovori« (Philosophical Conversations and Self-Talks). In recent years, he has focused mainly on the philosophy of (Neo-)platonism and Japanese Buddhism.

The book Misli svetlobe in senc (Thoughts of Light and Shadow) is intended to celebrate Uršič's seventieth anniversary. It contains discussions presented by their authors at a symposium in November 2019 on the occasion of Uršič's retirement. The contributions refer to a wide range of philosophical topics, ranging in time from Parmenides to contemporary philosophers of artificial intelligence, as well as to poems by Boris A. Novak, which introduce, conclude and artistically enrich the book.
