Breaks with Tradition in the Slovenian Performing Arts 1966-2006
Keywords:
independent theatre, experimental theatre, alternative theatre, noninstitutional theatre production, nongovernmental sector productionSynopsis
The present book examines the various forms of experimentation that took place in the second half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st in the field of so-called independent theatre (until the end of the 1980s it was mainly called experimental theatre, in the 1980s alternative theatre, in the 1990s noninstitutional theatre production, and since 2000 it has been best described as nongovernmental sector production). The common feature of the various interart, interdisciplinary and hybrid forms of performing was that they combined aesthetic innovation with a politically oppositional stance. The book examines the innovative tendencies that developed on Slovenian stages, especially in relation to dramatic theatre. These were a rejection of the theatre tradition based on the staging of dramatic texts and the traditional hierarchy of sign systems that are in the service of drama and subordinated to the presentation of the dramatic text, as well as the rejection of the convention of the communication model in theatre that separates the presented situation from the audience.
