Synopsis

The book Essentials of the United Nations System by Prof. Dr. Vasilka Sancin and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maruša Tekavčič Veber is an interactive book aimed at students, those who work with international organisations in practice, and the wider professional and general public. It is systematically divided into two main parts. The first, after a brief historical introduction, including an outline of the League of Nations, outlines the establishment and functioning of the UN, its principal and subsidiary organs, and the bodies set up within it, and provides a basic introduction to some of the fundamental issues such as the powers, privileges and immunities, financing and responsibility of international organisations. The second part is devoted to international organisations which, through agreements with the UN, have acquired the status of specialised agencies and thus form part of the UN system. This is a work that fills an important gap in the Slovenian literature on international law, international relations and other social sciences.
