Synopsis

Episodic memory and complex language are important characteristics of modern humans. Episodic memory enables mental time travel and it is mostly this ability, together with the use of language, which separates us from ancient human species. It refers to those past events which are remembered as personal and are tied to a concrete time and place. It provides us with autobiographical information about our personal past, and is therefore one of the foundations for the inception of our personal identity. It appears that we humans are the only creatures with a well-defined sense of our own identity. Indeed, the issue of self-awareness in animals remains open, at least for now. The studies of animals are difficult, since we always proceed from our human point of view, which is largely dependent on the visual experience.
