Kratka vsebina

These proceedings of the 16th Dance and the Child International Conference, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 7–12 July 2024, bring together contributions inspired by the conference theme I – Body, I – Dance; I for Imagination, Improvisation, Inclusion, Identity, Intelligence, and Interdisciplinarity. The event brought together 651 participants from 31 countries and explored dance as a space for learning, creativity, identity, personal and social transformation.

The proceedings include 22 peer-reviewed contributions by authors from 11 countries across five continents: four extended keynote abstracts, nine research papers, seven practice-based papers, and two reports. Together, they present contemporary perspectives on dance pedagogy, creative movement as a teaching approach, inclusion, identity development, interdisciplinary collaboration between the arts and education, and the role of dance in fostering creativity, empathy, and social connection.

The conference theme was explored through six interconnected dimensions: imagination, improvisation, inclusion, identity, intelligence, and interdisciplinarity. The contributions demonstrate that dance is not only an art form but also a powerful way of learning, communicating, and understanding the world, supporting children and young people in developing self-expression, confidence, and meaningful relationships.

The proceedings also include the daCi Ljubljana Declaration, signed during the conference by the Slovenian Minister of Culture and the Slovenian Minister of Education under the auspices of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO. The Declaration recognises access to quality dance education as a fundamental right of every child and calls for the continued development of dance education within educational and cultural contexts.

This publication makes an important contribution to international dance pedagogy, artistic research, and education while offering valuable insights into contemporary dance practices and research from around the world.
