Keywords:
comprehending and interpreting music, identity of music, “applied” musicologySynopsis
The issues related to examining the relation of music to its own content and deter-mining its broader referential framework – one that defines it and gives it purpose and meaning – represent the mainstay of the discourse on music in general. This text aims to provide an introduction to the topics concerned with comprehending and interpreting music, to pose essential questions of the identity of music as a process and as work, and, to thus phenomenologically examine the ontological foundations of music, as well as detect its cognitive elements and reveal its qualitative landmarks. Our goal is, therefore, to “comprehend musical comprehension” and “interpret musi-cal interpretation” in order to reveal the basic mechanisms of examining music and the effects thereof, and consequently to establish a network of essential evaluative models.
