Humanism in Transcultural Perspective: China
Keywords:
transcultural research, transcultural sublation, Chinese ideational tradition, humanity, subjectivitySynopsis
This book attempts to present those aspects of humanity and humanism that have emerged from the Chinese, especially the Confucian, ideational and cultural tradition. In doing so, it proceeds mainly from discourses developed within the framework of ancient Chinese history, evaluating primarily classical sources and materials. As a basis for the synthesis or transcultural “sublation” that the author presents in the methodological introduction as the central method of contrastive analysis on which this study is based, she also seeks to present those aspects of contemporary Chinese theories of humanity and subjectivity that have emerged in dialogue with this ancient Chinese history of ideas on the one hand and modern European discourses of humanism on the other.
