Synopsis

This work analyses thirty-one African Anglophone novels published in Slovene between 1960 and 2022 and their reception in the Slovene target culture. The focus is on authors from the former British African colonies or their successor states: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia and South Africa. Thematically, the novels deal with the colonial past and its effects on society and the individual. By contrast, novels of South African authors focus on the inter-racial dynamics during and after apartheid. By defining the field of translation of African Anglophone literature into Slovene, the monograph aims to fill a gap in translation studies in the field of translation of the African Anglophone novel. The analysis of text segments presents Slovenian translators’ translation strategies in rendering non-standard culturally specific elements from Anglophone African novels into Slovene and provides a path forward for future translations of Anglophone African literature into Slovene.
