Method 6-3-5
Synopsis
Method 6-3-5 is a group method to encourage creative thinking. It represents the most well-known version of brainwriting, which serves as an alternative to brainstorming. The method is used to solve problems that are not overly narrow and closed. It helps to generate a large number of ideas in a short period of time and to specify them. The process involves the silent, written generation of ideas, which are then shared among group members, to encourage them to draw inspiration from these ideas for new ones. The name of the method reflects its structure, since the task of each of the six participants is to generate three ideas in five minutes and write them down on the worksheet. Participants then pass their worksheets to their neighbours. In the next round, each participant reads the ideas on the received worksheet and adds three new ideas, either by combining, modifying, or changing existing ideas, or by creating entirely new ones. The process takes six rounds, with each participant adding three ideas to every worksheet. This results in a total of 108 ideas in just 30 minutes.
