Training and Development of Employees Using Immersive Technology
Synopsis
Immersive technology (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality) blurs the line between physical and virtual worlds, providing innovative opportunities for employee training and development. This chapter explores its applications in human resource management, focusing on onboarding, upskilling, and enhancing safety protocols. By offering realistic and adaptable simulations, immersive technology enables employees to acquire technical skills, refine soft skills, and practice safety measures in controlled, risk-free environments. The method’s strength lies in its ability to personalize learning experiences, deliver immediate feedback, and simulate scenarios that are dangerous, costly, or otherwise unattainable in real life. For instance, VR fosters engagement and enhances knowledge retention, while AR and MR combine real-world environments with interactive digital overlays, facilitating hands-on learning. The chapter highlights both the potential and limitations of immersive technologies, including technological, psychological, and organizational challenges. It underscores the essential role of psychologists and HR professionals in integrating these tools into training strategies, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, and evaluating outcomes. While immersive technology requires careful planning and resources, its transformative impact on workforce development positions it as a cornerstone of modern workplace practices.
