Social Mechanisms of Book Impact: A Relational Approach to Understanding the Publishing Field
Synopsis
The text takes as its point of departure the research approach of Andrej Blatnik to the publishing field as a specifically structured social space and situates it within the broader framework of contemporary book studies. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory, alongside theoretical developments in the work of John B. Thompson and Michael Bhaskar, the article conceptualises publishing as a dynamic system of relations between actors, forms of capital, and mechanisms of legitimation. Within this framework, Blatnik’s approach is mobilised as a relational-integrative and situated perspective, combining analytical distance with the experiential position of an active participant in the communication circuit of the book. This perspective serves as a heuristic basis for a more precise account of the conversion processes between economic, symbolic, and other forms of capital, and their role in structuring the publishing field. The central contribution of the article lies in a systematic differentiation of the social mechanisms of book impact. It distinguishes between relatively measurable indicators (such as sales, library circulation, translations, media visibility, awards, and adaptations) and less observable or intangible forms of influence (such as canonisation, discursive and sociopolitical effects, and reading practices). The analysis demonstrates that book impact operates as a multidimensional, relational, and often indirectly observable process that resists simple quantification. On this basis, the article in correspondence with Blatnik’s work develops a conceptual framework for understanding book impact as a system of interrelated effects emerging from the interaction between production, mediation, and reception. This framework provides a more differentiated interpretative tool for analysing publishing fields and contributes to the methodological and theoretical consolidation of book studies.
