Formation and Transformation of Korean Confucianism
Keywords:
Confucianism, KoreaSynopsis
This book examines the formation and transformation of Korean Confucianism from the early historical period through the colonial and postliberation eras to the divided Korea of the late 20th century. It traces the ways in which Confucian thought, originally transmitted from China, was introduced to the Korean Peninsula, adapted to local conditions, and gradually established as one of the central intellectual, political, ethical, and cultural traditions of Korea. Rather than treating Korean Confucianism as a passive reception of Chinese ideas, the study emphasizes its historical process of indigenization and transformation within changing Korean social and political contexts.
