Synopsis

The present book is a scientific monograph that explores emotions in terms of independent psychological phenomenon and in relation to motivation and cognition. It consists of six chapters: Introduction, The scientific basis of emotions, The appraisal of a situation and emotional brain, The appraisal of goals and the motivational role of emotions, Goal-incongruent emotions and stress and Goal-congruent emotions and positive aspects of self. A common thread of the chapters are the hypotheses, developed and substantiated with recent state-of-the-art research, verified through our own research findings, set in adequate conceptual models and, finally, validated. To conclude the monograph, the guidelines for further research on emotions in the context of one’s optimal functioning in everyday life are provided.
