Synopsis

This scientific monograph is based on a longstanding research project that focused on the process of education-to-work transitions. It centred on those who are entering nationally regulated welfare professions in the field of education and social protection in Slovenia and the wider EU market. These transitions are examined from the perspective of those who were entering the labour market in the context of the global economic crisis that started in 2008, and has in the following years created additional pressures on the Slovenian welfare state and with that totally destabilised the traditional entry routes to employment. The study finds prolonged precarisation, invisible work, transitional learning and risks that students, unemployed graduates and precarious early careers undertake in the process of entering welfare professions and searching for secure jobs on the Slovenian or wider EU market. This prolonged precarisation hinders life and career planning, results in unpredictable entry into professions based on precarious circumstances and available entry jobs/schemes, and stimulates migration and waithood that consequently hinders and delays the transition into social adulthood and widens class backlogs and intersectional inequalities. Moreover, these unfavourable structural conditions also stimulate collective transitional learning that enables critical literacy about structural inequalities, the building of a community of invisible and excluded individuals and (self-)organisation geared towards fighting these inequalities.
