»Bela kuga«: ilegalni abortusi in zmanjševanje rodnosti na Slovenskem v obdobju med obema vojnama
Keywords:
abortion, illegal abortions, birth rate, legalisation of abortion, Slovene lands, interwar periodSynopsis
This publication focuses on the issue of abortion in Slovene lands in the interwar period. In the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, as in other European countries, the interwar period was marked by pronatalist and eugenic initiatives by the authorities and other influential social groups, concerned with the decreasing quantity and quality of the population and the increasing number of criminal abortions. The first section of the book briefly presents some information regarding the demographic trends in the interwar period as well as legal developments regarding the subject of abortion from a longer temporal perspective. The next section concentrates on the analysis of public discourse on the problems of depopulation and criminal abortion in the Slovene media of the interwar period. The last part of the publication deals with the intimate stories of women who had abortions, and those of people (midwives, doctors, etc.) who performed illegal abortions.
