Synopsis

The monograph The Barun valley beneath Makalu. Scientific field research within the framework of the Himalayan climbing expeditions in 1972 and 2014 is almost one of a kind in Slovenia due to its interdisciplinarity. To date, we are not aware of a publication that represents one or more mountaineering expeditions in the Himalaya during which scholarly field research was carried out in various branches of the natural sciences, including medicine. This kind of research, and on the scale on which it was conducted in 1972, was not done on Slovene (or, at the time, Yugoslav) expeditions in mountains abroad, neither before nor after. In 1972, within the framework of the 4th JAHO (4th Yugoslav Mountaineering Expedition in the Himalaya), research was conducted simultaneously in three disciplines in the natural sciences under the same conditions and in the same landscape. It is therefore fitting that this research appears in the same publication. This is also an opportunity to publish research carried out in the same geographic area during the 2014 mountaineering expedition. For this monograph, we have gathered nine authors. Three authors are geographers, three biologists, one a geologist, one a medical doctor, and one a mountaineer and an expert in the history of mountaineering, a participant in the 1975 Makalu expedition and one of the first Slovenian climbers to reach the summit of Makalu via the southern face. The monograph offers the opportunity to learn about a specific high-altitude landscape from a wide variety of perspectives, providing a holistic view of environmental conditions and how they are changing.
