This monograph is the fruit of four years of intensive work carried out between 2020 and 2024 as part of the major research project led by the author on “Latin and German chronicles in Slovenia”. The work, comprising two volumes, tells the story of the canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Sveta gora in 1717 and of the people involved in the event, which was without doubt the most significant religious event in the Goriška region in the 18th century, as well as investigating its broader historical, cultural and ecclesiastical context.
The principal primary source on which the research is based is Franciscan Father Maver Fajdiga’s account in one of the chapters of his manuscript work Bosnia Seraphica, written between 1778 and 1780. The first volume of the present study includes in turn an introduction summarising the key historical facts and presenting Father Fajdiga and his work; a discussion of the various historical sources; an outline of the events directly connected to the coronation; a discussion of the pre-1717 sources which mention Sveta Gora as well as of the post-1717 sources which describe or at least mention the coronation; an edition of Fajdiga’s original Latin work together with a Slovene translation (which can also be accessed online: https://sistory.github.io/LatNemKronike/); an appendix; an inventory of the associated artworks and graphical materials studied as well as a comprehensive bibliography.
The second volume comprises an extensive commentary on Fajdiga’s account of the coronation in 1717, providing a detailed contextual and historical discussion of the source text and guiding the reader, with the help of additional background information, through the events of the first quarter of the 18th century, both the coronation itself and the events leading up to it. The present study, which Slovene art historian colleagues encouraged me to undertake as part of the commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Sveta Gora in 2017, including the symposium held and associated edited volume published in that year, complements and extends this existing research.

Die vorliegende wissenschaftliche Monographie ist das Ergebnis einer vierjährigen Forschungsarbeit im Rahmen des Projekts Lateinische und deutsche Chroniken in Slowenien, das von 2020 bis 2024 unter der Leitung des Autors durchgeführt wurde. Sie widmet sich der Geschichte der Krönung des Gnadenbildes der Jungfrau Maria in Sveta gora (Heiligenberg) im Jahr 1717 und stellt die daran beteiligten Personen sowie den historischen, kirchlichen und kulturellen Kontext dieses bedeutenden Ereignisses dar. Die Krönung zählt zweifellos zu den herausragendsten religiösen Ereignissen in der Region Gorizia (Görz) im 18. Jahrhundert.
Die Monographie gliedert sich in zwei Bände und basiert auf der Beschreibung des Franziskanermönchs Maurus Faidiga, die er in einem Kapitel seines Manuskripts Bosnia Seraphica (1778–1780) verfasst hat. Der erste Band enthält eine begleitende Studie, die die gesammelten Fakten über das Ereignis selbst, den Autor Maurus Faidiga und sein Werk präsentiert. Zudem bietet er eine Darstellung der herangezogenen historischen Quellen sowie eine detaillierte Beschreibung der Ereignisse rund um die Krönung von 1717. Darüber hinaus werden Quellen berücksichtigt, in denen der Heilige Berg (sl. Sveta gora, it. Monte Santo) sowohl vor als auch nach 1717 erwähnt wird. Schließlich umfasst der Band auch eine Transkription des lateinischen Originaltextes mit Übersetzung (siehe auch https://sistory.github.io/LatNemKronike/), einen Anhang, eine Sammlung des enthaltenen Bildmaterials sowie ein umfassendes Verzeichnis der verwendeten Quellen und Literatur.
Der zweite Band bietet eine ausführliche Kommentierung von Faidigas Darstellung der Krönung von 1717. Dabei werden die Ereignisse sachlich eingeordnet und detailliert erläutert, sodass der Leser auf eine historische Reise durch das erste Viertel des 18. Jahrhunderts mitgenommen wird. Das Werk wurde auf Initiative von Kunsthistorikern konzipiert, die es als wertvollen Beitrag zu den Feierlichkeiten zum 300. Jahrestag der Krönung von 1717 sowie als Ergänzung zum Jubiläumsband vorschlugen, der die Vorträge eines Symposiums von 2017 versammelt.
