Peer Support in the Workplace
Synopsis
Peer support in the workplace is a form of psychosocial aid provided by experienced colleagues (peer supporters) to peers experiencing mental distress. It addresses challenges such as stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, and trauma, fostering shared experiences, better recognition of organizational challenges, and individual growth. Key benefits include increased accessibility to help, reduced stigma, quicker identification of at-risk individuals, and improved mental health and workplace relationships. In Slovenia, peer support programmes are used in high-stress professions like paramedics and firefighters, but the implementation of such programmes could benefit other sectors facing psychosocial challenges. However, mixed results regarding effectiveness highlight issues like inconsistent implementation, unclear role definitions, and lack of organizational support. Successful programmes require proper training, management backing, and supervision to prevent emotional exhaustion among peer supporters.
