Grieving in the Workplace

Authors

Hana Stela Hrovatin

Synopsis

Grief is universal and is one of the most painful things we are all likely to experience, as the loss of a loved one affects every aspect of our lives. However, grief is rarely addressed in the workplace. Most organizations fail to consider how workplace grief affects employee engagement and wellbeing. The benefits of education on how to approach the grieving person when returning to work are primarily that it can equip the manager and others with appropriate expectations, appropriate questions to ask the grieving person and, as a result, a positive work environment for the grieving employee, other employees and the work itself.
