This study examines the development of the idea of nature conservation in the Slovenian lands from the second half of the 19th century until the outbreak of the First World War. Against the backdrop of rapid industrialization and the expansion of infrastructure, a growing environmental awareness led to a series of individual and institutional initiatives to protect the natural environment. Influenced by the nature conservation movements north of the Karawanken, a distinct environmental culture soon emerged south of this mountain range, which manifested itself in the founding of various associations, mountaineering clubs, animal and plant protection organizations as well as early legislative efforts. The spread of nature-friendly values was further promoted by botanical gardens, environmental education and a lively public discourse in contemporary newspapers. These diverse activities not only contributed to the protection of endemic flora and fauna, but also increased the international visibility of the region and facilitated its inclusion in broader European conservation debates. Despite its peripheral geographical location, the Slovenian region has been actively involved in shaping transnational environmental movements, the legacy of which continues to have an impact today.
