Synopsis

Children are often unsure how to respond to emotions, and picture books can play an important role in supporting them. Educators—and, first and foremost, parents—can foster the development of children’s emotional intelligence and social skills through quality literary narratives. This article is based on an analysis of highquality picture books that reveal ways to encourage young children to explore their emotions—using images from the world of animals and plants—and to learn how to understand and manage them. One of the most effective and engaging approaches is through illustrations and texts that resonate with children in picture books. The article also highlights several picture books that, through playful storytelling, help children develop emotional intelligence and empathy, and identify and name various emotions and feelings. In addition, the article briefly addresses different types of emotions.
