Synopsis

In his play Bele rakete lete na Amsterdam (White Rockets Fly toward Amsterdam), Vitomil Zupan thematizes the social processes that shake up traditional ways of life, especially those of partnership and sex, at the beginning of the 1970s. This article focuses on sexuality and the emotions associated with it through literary interpretation and sociological and literary analysis. It concludes that the synthesis of all levels of conflict in the dramatic text is represented by the clash between tradition and detraditionalization, which the playwright, assisted by emotions (fear, shame, disgust, discomfort, etc.) and emotional states (affects: horror and panic), formulates in terms of social expectations (family life and marriage) and the personal desires of each character (individualization of sexuality and liberalization of sexual desire).
