The Power of Words and Images: Editing Children’s Literature

Synopsis

Drawing on my own experience, this paper describes the process of editing children’s literature. Throughout the entire process, from selecting a manuscript to producing the finished book, I work closely with the art editor, since children’s books are often richly illustrated. Together, we develop the publishing programme for each calendar year. We aim to include both established and emerging authors, although there are usually fewer new authors.

The text generally comes first. Before it is included in the publishing programme, we work closely with the writer or poet. Authors refine and polish their texts, while new authors develop their writing skills. An editor of children’s books must also be able to assess whether the content is appropriate for children of different ages, although age boundaries are not fixed. The editor must consider both beginner readers and children who can already read independently.

Once a text has been included in the programme, we decide who will illustrate the book. We then agree on the format, the series in which the book will be published, and the number of illustrations. The paper briefly introduces various literary forms and genres. Throughout the production process, we remain in dialogue with both the authors and the illustrators. Once the illustrations have been completed, a language editor and a designer also become involved.

Producing a book is a lengthy process, and many people and factors contribute to bringing it to its readers. The paper also discusses the power of words and images, as well as the importance of reading.
