Synopsis

This introductory chapter briefly outlines the most important historical events and gradual codification and formation of the Slovene language and of the Slovene national identity in the 19th century. Special emphasis is given to bilingualism of the Slovene population in this period and to different forms of censorial control in the 19th-cen­tury Habsburg monarchy.
