Journalistic Translation Criticism after the Second World War

The chapter presents an overview of journalistic translation criticism and the develop­ment of the discourse on journalistic translation criticism in Slovenia from the early 1950s to the present day. During the first period, spanning the post-war era through to 1975, sporadic statements on translation criticism are included in newspaper reviews. Reviews of Slovene literary translations contain general remarks about the quality of the translations, with negative assessments focusing on target-text linguistic inadequacy. Between 1975 and 1995, translators (many of whom were authors themselves) publish the first specialized articles on the role of translation criticism. Negative assessments of recently published translations are presented in journalistic articles. The period from 1995 onwards sees translation criticism in diverse forms, and research and specialized discourse on journalistic translation criticism is strengthened. With the development of digital technologies and electronic resources, journalistic translation criticism has now become increasingly accessible and, in its lay version, an effective tool in the hands of organized readers who manage to influence publishers’ decision-making. Throughout the entire period covered in the chapter, the prevailing lay and professional opinion is that there is not enough translation criticism in Slovenia.
