Two Heads Are Better Than One – Communication Transparency, Workplace Engagement and Turnover Intentions
Synopsis
Work engagement, transparent communication and turnover intentions are constructs which have been found to have significant correlations and influences in foreign business studies. In the present study, we were interested in examining how communication transparency relates to engagement and turnover intention among a sample of employees in Slovenia. The results were calculated from 124 adults in an online survey, of which 94 were women and 30 men, with a mean age of 34.3 years. The participants completed a survey which included the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, a self-assessment questionnaire on communication transparency, and a short questionnaire on turnover intentions. The results indicate a significant positive relationship between self-perceived transparency in communication and work engagement, and a significant negative relationship between self-perceived transparency in communication and turnover intentions, and a significant negative relationship between engagement and turnover intentions was also discovered. The results of the study have important implications for practice, especially if we take into account related foreign studies. We provide advice on how to promote communication transparency in organizations, which could lead to higher engagement and lower turnover intentions. For employees, this would mean more fulfilling work and less stress due to not thinking about changing jobs, and for companies, higher productivity and lower employee turnover.
