Welcome, Employed Foreigners – Analysis of the Employee Well-Being of Workers Coming from Abroad
Synopsis
In our study, we examined the well-being of employees and compared it between two samples, foreigners and Slovenians. We were also interested in the connection between perceived discrimination related to foreign citizenship and knowledge of the Slovenian language on the well-being of foreign employees. Our sample consisted of 321 participants employed in Slovenia, including 237 Slovenians and 84 foreigners from 18 different countries. We found a statistically significant difference in the well-being of employees between Slovenians and foreigners, with foreigners experiencing higher well-being. The analysis of the results also indicated that knowledge of the Slovenian language does not significantly affect the well-being of foreign employees, while perceived discrimination has a significant negative impact. Our conclusions can be particularly useful for organizations that regulate the status of foreigners in Slovenia and those that employ foreign workers. It is essential to focus on reducing discrimination against foreigners in the workplace. The results can also benefit foreigners seeking employment in the Slovenian labour market.
