Luiza Pesjak uses the theme of lakes or water as a central element for expressing intimate emotions, patriotism, and cosmopolitan awareness. In her texts – which range from a personal diary to more mature novellas and novelettes to short stories, novels, and books of poetry – water, lakes, and nature in general are primarily revealed as a space of God’s presence. Through descriptions of experiencing lakes, Pesjak also expressed Biedermeier religious contemplation and the aesthetic ideal of unearthly beauty. A lake is not simply a geographical feature, but can be both a reflection of inner worlds and a space for realizing spiritual freedom.
