Synopsis

This article first presents the Christian symbolism of baptismal water, which has two dimensions: purification and new life. Then, using two examples, it shows how this symbolism has influenced Slovenian literature. In France Prešeren’s epic poem Krst pri Savici (The Baptism at Savica Falls), baptismal water is a symbol of the path from violence to spiritual rebirth and entry into the new commandment of Love. In the poem Soči (To the Soča), Simon Gregorčič presents the water of this river as a reflection of eternal beauty and heavenly purity, still untainted by human wickedness. Both poets connect biblical images with the Slovenian landscape, in which water becomes a symbol of eschatological hope and national destiny. The symbolism of water thus combines biblical principles of God’s goodness with the artistic expression of purification and eternal joys.
