Synopsis

This article examines selected terms for water in Slovenian dialects. The first section etymologically analyzes some lexemes denoting water and its forms. Specifically, particular attention is paid to determining the chronolect in which native terminology was formed on the one hand and to identifying the foreign-language source of borrowed vocabulary on the other. The second part presents words meaning ‛pond’ in Slovenian local dialects based on the linguistics material collected for Slovenski lingvistični atlas (SLA, Slovenian Linguistic Atlas); namely, SLA question V563 mlaka ‛pond’. The spatial distribution of individual lexemes occurring across the entire Slovenian linguistic area is shown on a linguistic map, accompanied by a commentary.
