Synopsis

This article analyzes the struggle for linguistic hegemony in public space in Trieste and its surroundings from 1945 onward. After 1945, the Trieste area, a place where Italian and Slovene coexist alongside their often-conflicting cultural references, became a battleground between Italian and Slovene interests at multiple levels, marked by demonstrations, riots, and an overall atmosphere of tension. The article analyzes the map of monuments, buildings, and other elements of the linguistic landscape. Examining the linguistic landscape through analysis that does not rely on contemporary and politically neutral elements (e.g., traffic signs and signs on stores), but on older monuments and signs with a strong political content, contributes to a deeper understanding of the historical and social dynamics that still involve both linguistic communities (i.e., Italian and Slovene) that live side by side in the Trieste area.
