Synopsis

This article discusses selected place names in the Triestine area – that is, in Triest/Trst/Triest and its surroundings. The first section analyzes the place name Trieste and its versions in various languages (Tergeste, Triest, and Trst), focusing on its changes through time and movement from one language to another. The second section presents the Slovenian names of Trieste’s districts, which are largely of non-Slavic origin. The third section provides an etymological explanation of names for three places around Trieste: Aurisina/Nabrežina, Duino/Devin, and Prosecco/Prosek. According to the findings of historical linguistics and, within this, comparative linguistics, at least two of these are most likely of Slavic (i.e., Slovene) origin.
