Community interpreting in Slovenia

Synopsis

The article presents the development of education and research in the field of community interpreting in Slovenia, with a special focus on interpreting in healthcare settings, and provides details of the resources that are currently available to community interpreters or educational institutions wishing to work in this field. A brief overview of projects focusing on community interpreting over the last two decades highlights the European project MedInt (2007-2009) and the Slovenian project Interpreting for Healthcare in Slo­venia (2010-2013). The European migrant crisis prompted the European project MIME (2014-2018), fo­cusing on mobility and inclusiveness in a multilingual Europe, and a Slovenian project on the publication of a phrasebook aimed at facilitating the communication of migrants with healthcare providers (2016- 2018). The new application for healthcare providers, ZVEJA, which will be launched in 2025, is also presented. Next, the project on training teachers of community interpreting and intercultural mediation TRAMIG (2019-2021) is presented, which has also produced the first national vocational qualifications for community interpreters and intercultural mediators. Last but not least, the Code of Ethics and Stand­ards of Practice for Community Interpreting, endorsed by the most important Slovenian professional and professional associations, are presented.
