The role and work of a court interpreter in criminal proceedings

The article examines the role and significance of court interpreters in criminal proceedings. It presents both the regulatory framework of this field in the Republic of Slovenia and the standards of court inter­preting, aiming to provide insight into the work and duties of interpreters, particularly in relation to cri­minal proceedings. An introductory reflection on the constitutional role of interpreters is expanded with an overview of the key legal acts governing this area, especially Directive 2010/64/EU. The article then explores the issues of interpreting and translation in this context. It outlines the stages and participants of criminal proceedings, seeking, on the one hand, to systematize the work of interpreters in accordance with this approach and, on the other hand, to highlight the specificities and challenges whose awareness, understanding, and overcoming are essential for ensuring the rights and guarantees of participants in the proceedings who require interpretation or translation.
