Professional Learning Communities as a Response to the Challenges of the Gen-AI Era
Synopsis
The sustainable transformation of education in the context of introducing Gen-AI into education requires a radical shift away from linear forms of training towards systemic models of collaborative learning. This chapter presents and analyses the multi-level PLC (professional learning community) model, which combines a formal structure with the networking of teachers and institutions. An analysis of this and other similar models indicates that structured collaboration in these communities directly encourages the use of advanced, constructivist teaching methods and significantly increases the collective effectiveness of teachers. We place particular emphasis on the introduction of generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI), where models such as PLC are recognized as a key mechanism for the successful, critical, and pedagogically meaningful adaptation of new technologies. The establishment of a collaborative culture goes beyond the professional development of individuals; it represents a fundamental building block of a resilient school system that actively adapts to and co-creates changes in society. It also appears that such forms of professional learning communities are almost the only weapon in addressing the ever-changing use of Gen-AI in education.
