Synopsis

In contrast to Slovenian, modern standard German exists in several standard varieties, which developed in ten national and regional centers of German. This article focuses on the pluricentric concept of the German standard, which has been established in a dictionary of German standard varieties as well as by the German Orthography Council. The article presents some of the differences between the varieties, and orthographic differences in international words, especially foreign ones, are presented from a contrastive perspective.
