Synopsis

One usually associates linguistic norms with grammatical and orthographic correctness or accuracy. This article conceptualizes (linguistic) correctness in a multifaceted way; it is considered in the context of testing Slovenian. Language exams are developed and administered by the Centre for Slovenian as a Second and Foreign Language at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Arts, and they are used by adult nonnative users of Slovenian for a wide variety of official purposes. In the tests, priority is given to correct performance of the language task on the exam or to success in conveying the message; language correctness (accuracy) is only one of the categories assessed.
